Moving Your WordPress Site to a New Host
Even the most basic word press blog can present problems when you want to transfer the site to a new server.
I wish I had got a techo in right from the start … but here is what I went through and finally came out the other side. It’s not exactly best practice but it does give you a good overview of the process if you’ve never attempted it before. However, follow it at your own peril, every installation is different.
I upgraded word press and the plug-ins before I started the transfer process – you don’t want to transfer a site, find it doesn’t work and have to do a clean installation of an old version as you will have to find the correct installation file to make it backwards compatible. Once you’ve done that, go through the following steps;
- Backup everything.
- Change the directory of the blog through the admin panel to the new domain address – if applicable
- Tar up (backup to a GZ file) the whole directory and the databases (I didn’t want to just take the essential files and plug-ins even thought you would do it this way)
- Downloaded the file to your hard drive.
- Extract it using the free extractor “Power Archiver” http://www.powerarchiver.com/download/
- Create a new WP database on your new server
- Restore the database from your hard drive into the newly created database
- Upload the directory to your new server via FTP
- Change the wp-config.php file so it refelects the new databse name and password.
- Change the domain name servers to reflect the new host
- Hope like hell that the new site comes up properly.
Some quirks I found;
- My host didn’t use the default “local host” in the wp-config.php file (opens in notepad) so I had to locate the right hosted resource terminology for the database.
- My host also didn’t use the standard terminology for the “cgi-bin” file so I had to rename the file just “cgi”
- If the host doesn’t not allow uploads of sql databases due to security reasons you can usually get around it by uploading a backup file of the same name and resorting it from the default backup file. As a last resort you can import the database by converting it to a csv file and import it through pHp admin.
If your eyes glaze over reading this – get a professional in and save yourself the grief!
