Google Sitelinks and How They Help You.

Filed under Blogging, SEO, Search Engines

Google sitelinks are the extra links showed in the results of your SERP’s (Search Engine Ranking) as shown in the picture below.

If the site has been around for more then 8 months, is in an active state and has a lot of incoming links (with the same or similar title), this all contributes to your sitelink status and whether Google will show them in the search results.

Getting sitelinks isn’t easy at all and it takes time and persistence to get them.  According to Google, site links are the sites that are the most popular or have the most authoritative pages, but does not necessarily mean that they have a great pagerank or high traffic.  It basically means that according to Google the site has great content, which in my opinion is a great attribute to have.  Content is and always will be king and having sitelinks just pushes your site further up in the authority stakes.

Google Sitelinks can help you in  a lot of ways but the most obvious is your SERP’s.   After you get your sitelinks you are sure to get the best SERP positions for whatever keyword you target, within reason of course. If you do a blog post about a certain niche, you could probably rank in the top 20 SERPs for that keyword.  However if you have an authoritative blog, you can easily rank for whichever keyword you want.

A recent case is my post on the First Battery Charge on your Apple  iPhone 4.  This Entmind blog post was ranked on the first page of Google within 24 hours for several keyword phrases.  This is because the Entmind blog contains over 3,500 posts of quality content and has been around a while so Google ranks it pretty highly – we still don’t have sitelinks yet though!

You can’t just apply for sitelinks,  as they are part of Googles famous algorithm.  Google decides when your site has enough backlinks and content to be considered authoritive, then you will be issued sitelinks automatically.  You do have to have a good site structure in place before you will be considered and your website porbbaly has to be at least a few years old.

It would be great if they offered some kind of notification if your website has got the sitelinks but they don’t so you’ll have to keep searching your site on Google to check on it or access them through Google Webmaster Tools .
